The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) South Florida Chapter met at the Tamarac Public Library on March 13th, 2010. I made a presentation on Cuban Baseball Card issues to announce the publishing of my article “Cuban Baseball Cards: The Golden Years 1909-1950” in the Spring 2010 issue of Old Cardboard magazine.

2010 Salon de la Fama del Deporte Cubano (Cuban Sports Hall of Fame), held its annual selection luncheon on March 7, 2010, in Miami, Florida. The event featured special awards given to Cuban baseball greats Tony Perez, Camilo Pascual, Tony Taylor, Orlando Pena, Jackie Hernandez, Anfres Fleitas, Leo Posada, Hector Maestri, and Miguel De La Hoz. 2009 Salon de la Fama del Deporte Cubano (Cuban Sports Hall of Fame), founded by Sports Editor Marino Martinez, held its annual selection luncheon on February 8, 2009, in Miami, Florida. The event featured special awards given to Cuban baseball greats Minnie Miñoso, Tony Taylor, Paul Casanova, Jackie Hernandez, Choli Naranjo, Leo Posada, Bobby Ramos, and Miguel De La Hoz. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) South Florida Chapter met at the Tamarac Public Library on September 27th, 2008. Special guest Jose Tony Zardon was honored and presented with a photo plaque with photos from his baseball career. Tony was a star in the Amateur and Professional leagues in Cuba. He was a member of the 1945 Washington Senators, a star player in the Florida International League, and played in Mexico and Venezuela. Pictured on the right is Sam Zygler, Tony Zardon and myself.

“Caritas Cuba” Charity Softball Game held in Miami to raise money for Hurricane Ike victims in Cuba. Played on September 20, 2008, at Shenandoah Park. Among those participating were Rene Arocha, Rolando Arrojo, Eddie Oropesa, Michael Tejera, Hanzel Izquierdo, Ariel Prieto, Eduardo Morlan, and Osvaldo Fernandez. Also present were Tony Perez, Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, and Rey Ordoñez.

Angel Torres presented his new book El Legado Deportivo de Angel Torres: La Biblia del Beisbol on Saturday, September 6th, 2008, at Sentir Cubano, in Miami. The book is a Spanish language collection of the best sports articles from the prolific sports writer’s career. Included in the book are several Cuban baseball related stories.

Pasion Magazine held it’s first annual awards banquet on February 13, 2008 in Coconut Grove, Florida. Receiving Awards were Mike Lowell, Sportsman of the Year and Yunel Escobar, Rookie of the Year. Also honored were Broadcaster Felo Ramirez and Writer Angel Torres. Pictured on the right is Marino Martinez, Felo Ramirez and myself.

Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria presented his new book La gloria de Cuba: historia del béisbol en la isla, during the Miami Book Fair on November 13, 2004. The book is the Spanish language updated version of his outstanding 1999 book, The Pride of Havana: A History of Cuban Baseball. The Yale professor spoke candidly about Cuban baseball and his personal memories of the Cuban version of the sport.

 More Than a Game: A Celebration of Negro League Baseball presented by the African-American Library and Cultural Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. April 2004. During this wonderful event I had the pleasure of meeting Chico Arenas, who played in the minor leagues and with the Indianapolis Clowns, in 1957, at the very end of the Negro League experience.
